Music brings together the body, the mind, the heart and the voice and therefore plays an incredibly important role in the “whole child” education central to the City Country School experience.
Unlike more traditional choruses, our twice-weekly singing sessions in the dojo (for all Elementary, including teachers) have a particular focus on getting reluctant singers to sing. In addition to feeling great and sounding good, singing in English is a great way to develop fluency with language. To that end, we go beyond vocal exercises and traditional songs and the sessions center around songs which really motivate kids to sing (in the dojo, on the patio, and even in the car), such as “Shout” by Tears for Fears, “We Will Rock You” by Queen or Shakira’s “Try Everything.”
The Music sessions at City Country School have a 3-prong focus: rhythm (percussions ensemble work), music appreciation (genres and composers), and basic music literacy (intonation, notation, etc…).
