Children’s House
In the Children’s House the three-to-six-year old child develops autonomy, focus and concentration through work with concrete materials in a prepared environment, which includes freedom of movement and choice of activity. The Montessori-trained adult demonstrates the use of the materials, observes each child’s needs, keeps records of their progress in all areas, and protects and cultivates the nascent community.
Children’s House is where the child learns to know and to trust the environment, to be part of a community, to act upon the surroundings, to find his or her concentration, to experience the pleasure of work, and to become autonomous. The child develops these skills by interacting with an environment especially prepared for his or her specific moment of development by trained adults who mediate the environment, present the materials, and accompanying the child. The classroom encourages freedom within limits and a sense of order.
The City Country School Children’s House is a small and completely independent environment prepared for children three to six years old. The Montessori environment houses a complete collection of Montessori didactic materials and an outdoor Practical Life area. An English-speaking Montessori guide leads the classroom, with the assistance of a Montessori trained assistant. The garden has a big sandbox, a climbing frame, wooden blocks, and fruit trees.
