Kitchen & Garden

In Elementary the kitchen garden is integrated into the curriculum, becoming part of their studies and project-work. The Elementary groups also visit the Dehesa de la Villa often, organize visits to other parks and the botanical gardens, and go camping.

The Kitchen Classroom is a space of making and thinking at the heart of the school (as kitchens are the heart of a home). It is a classroom in which the children can experience first-hand exactly why the story of humanity is the story of the preparation and sharing of food. Food is a nexus of human experience, a place where body, culture and spirit meet, a crossroads of the senses, of the inner and the outer. The kitchen classroom is a space in which to work on complex questions in a clear and sensorial way. Sharing food is at the heart of division. Making food for many people is at the heart of multiplication. In a kitchen you measure, weigh, estimate, observe, experiment, share, smell, feel, taste, experience.

Snacks & Lunches at City Country School are organic, legume and vegetable-based vegetarian meals prepared daily by the school cook. Each school sits down together for lunch everyday, students and teachers. Before eating we observe a moment of silence and then say the “Poem Before Lunch”
